Who knew a little chalk art could make folks so happy?

VANCOUVER, Wash. - A smiley face scribbled in chalk on a sidewalk - how much of a difference could such a simple act make?

A group called The Joy Team was determined to find out. So on Tuesday they handed out giant pieces of chalk at Esther Short Park and encouraged people to create something inspiring.

"We're just spreading some joy through the magic power of sidewalk chalk," founder Michele Larsen told us when we stopped by to see what was going on. "It's bright and colorful, they're smiling, they're giggling, they're laughing. People who are normally a little grumpy around here were out there and they were chalking and saying 'this is so much fun.' "

The Joy Team hopes to turn the event, dubbed 'Chalk the Walks,' into an annual affair.
