S. California dogs now up for adoption in Vancouver | Pets
Title
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - Animals lovers in the Vancouver and Portland, Ore., area have brought 67 dogs from Southern California, hoping to find them new homes.
With the help of the Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals, the dogs from San Bernardino arrived Sunday at the Humane Society of Southwest Washington. Society spokeswoman Kate Goudschaal says many are small breeds made popular by celebrities, including Chihuahuas, terriers and poodles.
Goudschaal says many California shelters are overwhelmed and have had to euthanize hundreds of dogs. But she says the Vancouver shelter has room and should be able to quickly find new owners. Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals says actress Katherine Heigl helped pay for a van to carry the dogs north.
Shelters in a number of states have responded to California's glut of little dogs by taking shipments of the animals and helping them to find homes.
